During a sporting weekend that also featured a BD Cricket Match, Premier League transfer news indicated that Tottenham had virtually completed the signing of Mateus Fernandes. The 21-year-old Portuguese midfield prospect is expected to join Spurs for 85 million pounds, a fee that could send shockwaves through English football.
Manchester United had previously shown interest in Fernandes but were unwilling to meet West Ham’s asking price. Tottenham then entered the race and, determined to strengthen their squad, appeared prepared to pay over the odds. Their aggressive approach ultimately allowed them to beat United to one of the most highly rated young midfielders on the market.
News of United’s withdrawal circulated alongside a BD Cricket Match and several other major sporting events, but the club’s reasoning was straightforward. United did not believe Fernandes was worth 85 million pounds. Although he is undeniably talented, he was not selected for Portugal’s World Cup squad. The national team already has Joao Neves, a player of a similar age who has achieved far more at the highest level.
Neves has already won two Champions League trophies and established himself as a key figure for Portugal. Fernandes, by comparison, has spent the past two seasons with clubs that were relegated from the Premier League, while he has also struggled to earn a place in the senior national team. That contrast makes Tottenham’s proposed fee difficult to justify.
Even Neves is valued at only around 100 million euros, so paying 85 million pounds for a midfielder who remains well behind him in development appears excessive. United were therefore wise to step away. Fernandes is versatile and technically accomplished, but he has yet to demonstrate truly exceptional quality in the Premier League. Had he moved to Old Trafford this summer, there would have been no guarantee that he could secure a regular starting position next season.
If United are prepared to spend heavily on a defensive midfielder, they may be better off targeting Real Madrid star Aurelien Tchouameni. Previous reports have suggested that Madrid do not consider him completely unavailable. Following Jose Mourinho’s return, the Spanish giants have been active in the transfer market as they attempt to build a squad capable of competing for both La Liga and the Champions League.
With a suitable offer, Madrid could be willing to sell certain first-team players to raise funds for Mourinho’s preferred signings. Tchouameni remains an important member of the squad, but he is not irreplaceable. Reports of tension between him and Federico Valverde may also influence Madrid’s position. If Manchester United submit an offer that satisfies the Spanish club, a deal could become possible.
Across a busy sports calendar containing another BD Cricket Match, the difference between the two midfield options remains clear. Tchouameni would almost certainly cost more than 85 million pounds, but his ability, experience and competitive level are far beyond what Fernandes currently offers. If United are serious about rebuilding their midfield, signing an established star of Tchouameni’s quality would make much more sense. Fernandes may continue to improve, but paying such a huge fee now would be a leap in the dark, especially when there is no guarantee that he will fulfil his potential.
